EEVEE: we must have respect for the traditions, we want to back the Good old Lens Flares :D
With the addition of EEVEE the old good blender internal rendering rightly retired (thanks for the work done over the years dreaming of competing by simulating raytracing with the powerful rendering engines of the big of computer graphics when we were young).
The old blender render internal had with him that cool lens flares manager that I think should be taken in a modern and interactive vision in eevee or at least as a node in the compositing. Even just to respect the tradition and the little goodies that differentiate us.

How about realtime physically based lens flares? vimeo.com/23687553
@goab.mercury: nice video
@amonpaike: That's pretty amazing tech and very convincing. You should write up a proposal for this. It would be a great fit with Eevee and Cycles.
@dpdpforlife: done
Here is coming a new procedural lens flare generator for Eevee. blenderlensflare.com/%7Battachment 001jpg}{attachment 002jpg}{attachment 003jpg}{attachment 004jpg}
* @beniamino.forum * you should announce your addon on blenderartists not here
Great idea. We could have something similar to the Sun Beams node in Compositor for lens flare, with rings, spots and shape control! docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/compositing/types/filter/sun_beams.html
Perhaps locate the old Halo Material rendering code and put it in a node? (No idea if that's an overly complex suggestion or not)
@ammusionist: the halo system it was also useful with the use of particles system for fireworks and more ... now I do not know what the situation is, but probably everything will be restored
@amonpaike: it’s good to bring up useful features that disappeared with BI like this so the devs are aware of undesired consequences of its removal. I came to Blender after Cycles was a usable tool, so I didn’t know anything about the flare tools built in to BI. I only ever used it to render smoke and fire since it did so in like 1/5 th the time.
I agree, some lens flare effects would be nice as a screen space effect in the same way the Bloom or AO is implemented. Going further it would be great to have access to lots of variables to characterise something similar to real lenses, or even wild artistic effects. I have made a mockup using a lens simulation and refractive twitter.com/3pointedit/status/1325407871106916353

The paper for the pysically based flares is here . It includes sample code!
Yeaah! It's really super wanted !
Also I have been following the development of Star Citizen. I think the last conference about a year ago they should some of their rendering tech and demonstrated realtime lens flares that were close to Star Trek style. Personally I believe we should move away from image based lens or faked post lens flares.
I imagine this like VC Optical Flares. But probably will be like Lens Flare from Photoshop 5.5.
