Measuring round, curvy shapes and circumferences by the mesh surface, not by edges

Hi there!

We at Ninma create 3D models with photogrammetry for businesses and museums. Currently we are working with the Theatre Museum, Finland and are creating 3D models for their dance costumes. The Theatre Museum would love to share their costume 3D models via Sketchfab around the world for scientist's, student's and replicant creator's study and they could also measure what ever measurement of the costume's 3D model. This would help a lot as now everyone have to travel to Helsinki Finland for studying and measuring the costumes. The costumes can also be very fragile and studying and measuring the costumes can damage them which is highly undesirable. Currently museums around the world are very interested to digitalize their artifacts into 3D models and they all share this same problem with the Theatre Museum.

Blender already has got a plug-in called MeasureIT for measuring round, curvy shapes and circumferences, but this tool allows you to measure shapes only by the polygon edges. However, for measuring what ever round, curvy shapes or circumferences with a mm accuracy, you need to be able to measure also across polygon faces to any direction. Ideally, you could simply draw a line to any direction you need by following the mesh surface / mat cap on the 3D model and the tool would count and inform the length of the line. Another problem with the MeasureIT plug-in is that photogrammetric 3D models are created with triangles, not squares. In order to use the MeasureIt plug-in, you need to first convert the triangle mesh into square mesh and unfortunately the transformed square mesh isn't accurate enough even for measuring curly shapes by the polygon edges.

Aldo if you happen to know that some other 3D software already offers this feature, please give me a hint!

Thanks a lot and looking forward the measuring tool development!

Have you tried shrink wrapping a circle mesh to the object then apply the shrink wrap then measure the circle?
