Edit linked original when using linked objects
It would be handy shortcut if when you are editing scene with huge amount of linked groups that you could select the object / group and click "edit original" / "edit linked" and then Blender opens the linked object to let you make edits to it and save it.
Currently how I work is that if I need to edit some asset in my scene, I need to "open recent" and then I have to remember the name of the asset I want to change, if it even is in the recent list. If it's not, then I have to search the file from my assets folder.
So the "edit linked object" button would be for example in the object menu and it remembers the linked objects location from where it was linked to the current scene.
Where the idea came from: This is the basic workflow when you are creating a magazine with InDesign and you wanna edit some picture in your project. After clicking "edit original" the program opens for example Photoshop or Illustrator, if the image is made with that. When you have done your edits in that other program, you save it and InDesign updates the linked object to the magazine project. I think it would be adopted to Blender also because it makes things easier to handle.

This is also available already in the Edit Linked Library add-on that ships with Blender. Just enable the add-on and check out the Relations tab in the Tool Shelf.
Full disclosure: I wrote Edit Linked Library.
You need to save your current file before you can leave it to work on the linked file. Try saving your file first and see if it works for you.
Hello, This feature is kind of already implemented in Amaranth Addon by Pablo Vazquez : pablovazquez.org/amaranth/ It would be good to have it native though
cool! I did not know about that! I also wish it will be in native. I love modular modeling.
