Box Mask effect in VSE

I was trying to do some simple titles in a video, and in order to make a simple box mask, I have to go to the mask editor, create a mask, and then use that mask I created.

Problem is I had about 100 different titles I needed to make that were all different sizes, meaning I had two choices. 1) Make a separate mask for each one or 2) make one large generic mask that can surround all possible text that I could type, and use that, even though most of my titles were only about 7 characters long.

A simple box / ellipse mask would be fantastic. I am learning the Python-Blender API, so I will try and write an add-on soon, but it seems since they already have one in the compositor, it would be a no-brainer to include it in the VSE as well.

I don't really get what the masks are for in this situation and I'm curious to know, could you show me an example ?

I think that the OP wants to create simple shapes to use with the text effect in the VSE. So that they would be a new effect type. But this can be done with masks already applied to a color effect. Perhaps they want to build the shape into the text object but that would require the text effect to have layers.

First I'm not sure how you would be any better off in the compositor as you still have to modify the size for every size title. In TV production we generally specify a fixed size box that will accomodate either 1 or 2 lines of full width text. Perhaps you could just create a few generic size masks then select the ones you want. You can also leverage meta strips to make simple templates, that you swap the contents of.
