Curves - Drawing Plane constraints (like grease pencil's)
Give the Curve Edit Mode the same planar constraints (Drawing Planes) as the Grease Pencil's Draw Mode.
Currently, we have these 2D and 3D "modes" in the Curve Object Data Properties tab:
The problem is you have to choose which you want to work with. And there isn't much back and forth you can do. If you have curves drawn in 3D and hit the 2D button, your shape will flatten on the Z axis and you won't be able to retrieve it back (unless you undo). Also you won't be able to draw in 3D again, unless you go back to 3D mode, but if you want to draw in 2D again, you have to lose your 3D shapes and flatten again.
I think having the Drawing Planes constraints would give us more flexibilty by switching back and forth from 2D to 3D in the same Curve object:

Spline Curves have very different interpretation modes between the 2d and 3d versions
basically, if you choose 2d, you can use the "FILL" mode to generate geometry (wich you can extrude afterward)
3D curves can't be filled, but they also have thickness and tilt data
basically : the mode should be picked depending on what you want the curve to do and not how you want to manipulate it (that's why we have the 3d cursor and manipulator coordinates options for )
* @meutzitzu * I'm not saying we should remove the 2D / 3D modes, just have more options to manipulate the 3D ones. I don't think that's mutually exclusive, both can cohabit.
this should be "modo like" transform orientation mode - not only for curves but also for standard modeling - determination of axis plane which is perpendicular for navigation camera view. Smthg like "axis plane" named i think.. imgur.com/a/FbkzdZt
* @impacman * I don't know how it is in Modo. But if I understand you correctly, there is already the possibility to set an orientation for standard modeling.
* @Ryxx * did u see my picture link? (axis in top right corner ) :) youtu.be/doazrHltwa0 - look in modo's left corner - modo automatically determines plane of two axis for editing objects
agreed, I would go further than that and allow any custom user axis to be used as well
