ACEScg support

Hey Blender Developers!

I wanted to suggest adding support for ACEScg to Blender. As a Redshift user in Blender, it would make my life a lot easier to have ACEScg available as an option. I know ACES is supported already, but I think ACEScg would be a great addition for professional color grading and management workflows.

With Redshift becoming increasingly popular in Blender, it's important to have all the color management options available. I think adding ACEScg support would be a great feature for all Blender users, not just Redshift users.

So, what do you guys think? Could you add ACEScg to Blender?

Thanks for your time and keep up the great work!

Blender does support ACES like you mention, but isn't delivered in the default blender release. Selecting the ACES OCIO configuration is doable via an environment variable. Also check the Blender Projects development which allows you to select a OCIO config for each project you're working on.

Adding ACES by default raises some questions:

  • Which ACES configuration, there are many different ones each with their own pro/cons.
  • Some configurations are 1GB it might be better for most users not to included them by default, but only when needed
  • There are functionalities inside blender that don't work with ACES yet and needs to be changed. IMO we should first fix this before considering ACES as a default in Blender as this would confuse a lot of users and increase the number of bug reports as it isn't clear to users what works and what not.

Eventually the goal for blender is to support it and there is work being done related to this subject.
