Material Override

Blender should have a quick and easy material override for Linked objects. Many programs have already implemented this function, when without any problems you can assign the material to any object that has been linked as a reference. For example, I have 10 models of engines > 150 MB in size. I need to show the engines with different colors, materials, lights. An easy way to link engines to a new scene. Then the scene takes up little space, no matter how many megabytes the engines take up. I found a way (not very intuitive) how to assign a material to one solid linked object. It is necessary to make local direct linked data block and then you can change the material. But if there are hundreds of objects, then it does not work. As a result, I propose to make a quick and convenient way - to right-click on the material and make it local and already change. Or add without problems new material.
A normal library of materials is also sorely lacking. I think this will bring the blender to a new level and increase the number of users!

For several years, this is a new standard in CG - link not only own format, but also abc, obj and others, create assets from them ( in the case of Blender - Collections) and then very easy to assign materials to them... Thanks!

Bump up - for any database driven workflow it is crucial to access materials of linked meshes in the scene. But it seems like this has been forgotten?

Regular situation: You link in an asset from your database, but then you need to change the shader a bit. Now you would need to completely merge the asset, otherwise this is not possible. Is it?

The most imortant thing is to have an option to exclude one ore more Material from the Overriding.

That is already planned with static and later dynamic overrides AFAIK. Static overrides were a target of Blender 2.80 but it got postponed to (hopefully) 2.81 which should land 3 months after 2.80.

You can even give it a try if you start Blender 2.8 beta with "--enable-static-override" from the command line. However I have no idea what the status of the feature is at the moment. Definitely don't use it for production work.

* @michael * Sorry, I don`t understand what I need to do after add --enable-static-override... this is my cmd line... E:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\blender-2.80.0-git.513b71c89ad0-windows64>blender --enable-static-override but there is no feedback enable it or not ))

* @a1ex3d1983 * use the search for "static override". But as this is still in development I can't tell you anything else other than that it is .... in development.
