Old post - don't know if there are any updates. But this is an absolutely regular feature in most render engines. Some allow also to exclude transparency and displacements / Bump from the override - very handy.

Was already implemented (
developer.blender.org/D1281
), but it's not flexible enough - the better solution would be to add a python-based way of overriding only some materials.

in 3Dsmax, there is an overide exlude or include setting and it only take one or more object selection set, exactly what blender group are, and it's just fine. you usualy put your mirrors and glasses in it. It faill for object with transparency.
In blender I've made an ubershader that have the overider inside and all my object share this shader exept meshligt, this way I can render depth, wirecolor and clay effortlessly even with transparency. still it fails for glasses (for now)

It would be best if you could flesh out this proposal a bit more for folks who aren't as familiar with your workflow as you are. For instance, is this exclude option in Render Layers or is this a material setting (i.e. "Don't override me")? What would this option look like in the interface? For instance, if this is a Render Layers option, then how would you determine which materials can't be overridden?

...and transparent objects, and mirrors...
is there any updates on this feature?
