Absolute distance Edge Loop concept

When working on real-life based or precise models, its cubersome to place Edge Loops and be forced to use relative factors.

It would be great if we had an option to place them precisely where we want along the surface.

I prepared a small concept of how absolute distance edge loops could work:

  1. Edge Loops should start at the closest existing edge loop user is hovering over. Currently, Blender begins Edge Loops in the middle, inbetween existing Edge Loops, which is cubersome for precise modeling.
  2. After picking desired edge loop to extend from, user is free to type absolute distance along surface, where new edge loop will appear.
  3. Pressing F flips the new edge loop onto either side
  4. Making an edge loop inside of a single face is an inset (optional)

More easy-to-understand explanation in the video below:

I feel like most of the proposal is more in the realm of a nice-to-have and quality-of-life changes.

If the devs had to pick one thing to start working on to make things less daunting for them and make a big impact on user experience, it's the ability to have an absolute measurement input. And not just for the loop cut operator. Edge/vertex slide and inset could use that too. Perhaps other operators could benefit from this too?

you could just use edge slide instead of asking for an entirely new feature

open up blender and try edge slide by 0.33 meters. come back when you're done

oh. edge slide is fractional too, i didn't know that. that does seem counterintuitive
