Improve Blender's Image Editor

Hello everyone. I'd like Blender's Image Editor to support Layers and Selection modes. Here is what inspires me:

(Layers) New Layer, New Layer Group, Duplicate layer, Anchor layer, Merge Down, Merge Layer Group, Delete Layer, Raise Layer, Lower Layer, Layer to Top, Layer to Bottom, Add Layer Mask, Apply Layer Mask, Delete Layer Mask, Show Layer Mask, Edit Layer Mask, Disable Layer Mask, Mask to Selection, Add Layer Mask to Selection, Subtract Layer Mask from Selection, Intersect Layer Mask with Selection

(Selection) Rectangle Selection, Ellipse Selection, Free Selection (Lasso), Fuzzy selection (Magic wand), Intelligent Scissors

Please, will you let me know if is it anything above planned or if will it be considered, and any ETA in such cases?

Thanks in advance for any help. Regards, have a nice day.

Kindly, Giuseppe.

Edit: I guess this can be considered as done. Thanks so much for your help ^^

I just saw your link on YouTube, weird, I didn't notice before. By the way, now I see how to effectively use masks and not miss selection modes. Thanks again.

If you have any questions about texture paint in Blender, feel free to comment on one of the videos I have up on youtube and I can try to help you. Texture Paint is my main passion and it is true that the system in Blender is not so easily understandable from the perspective of a user of other software.

Working through a camera in 3d space, you can already imitate a lot of this by using something like Ucupaint on an image plane. I have my own Draw2Paint addon and I explore my own ways to do this, but I paint exclusively through Blender and use the Mask tool as a way to set reusable layer masks when working in multiple images mixed together in a shader.

I see, but how do you simulate selection modes?

The big hurdle for Blender users coming from a 2d painting app like Photoshop is to stop thinking of a 'selection' of pixels as in the marching ants and to think of the black and white areas of a mask as the selection. You paint a mask with the Mask Tool on a disconnected image and you can use a higher pixel count than your target texture for precision. You can then invert the Stencil mask and use a different UV mapping if you want, all separate from actual masks created in the shader tree where you can mask multiple times using different mappings there. If you are painting on a flat plane in the camera view, you can use that camera for UV alignment and unwrap new mesh as a selection or mask there to paint through to the original image plane.

Bool Tool a cube from another and use that as a mask for the image, this is all possible but in the 3d viewport through a camera, not the Image Editor as I said on the other suggestion thread - this is because there is not a layer system in the image editor, it is geared for individual images for now. I am not sure what you are painting, if you are painting on flat images only or are you painting on the 3d object itself in the 3d view, but the Mask Tool is one of the most underrated tools in Blender Texture Paint hands down, but most users come expecting the pixel based tools from Photoshop or Gimp versus the geometry based tools the Blender has.

I have little or no problem with mask, I guess they're conceptually similar to alpha channel in a raster editor. I'm only concerned about resulting precision in cutting out shapes. If this is a problem that can be overcome, then it's ok for me. As earlier, thanks so much for your help.

I saw you didn't reply to my last comment, but I guess this is important.

How can I be quick and precise using mask?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mask Tool, set your brush falloff to be slightly harder than default and set a higher resolution image as your stencil in the top bar masking that what your target is. Then when you paint the selection, you can also invert it there as well. youtu.be/4IsTnQU2f8A

Either add as nodes or built in tools
