2D Metaballs for motion graphics!?

Hi folks,

Metaballs could be really great for motion graphics, but they can be pretty heavy on the CPU (or GPU?)

What would help greatly would be to have the option to work with them in flat, 2D space. This would great reduce the mesh complexity and make them easier to work with for mograph.

Perhaps this is already possible? If so, please, someone, tell me the trick!

Metaballs are currently an unmaintained part of blender. Voxels are planned to be the future of surfacing. If you found a paper for creating 2D implicit surfaces (...surfaces?). Go ahead and try your hand at it. If your primary goal is performance though I would start with profiling and tightening that area. git.blender.org/gitweb/gitweb.cgi/blender.git/blob/refs/heads/master:/source/blender/blenkernel/intern/mball.c git.blender.org/gitweb/gitweb.cgi/blender.git/blob/refs/heads/master:/source/blender/blenkernel/intern/mball_tessellate.c

Sorry, one more thing that would make metaballs killer:

Say for have a plane and ball A and ball B.

Ball A will influence the plane .

Ball B will influence the plane.

The Balls A & B won't influence each other.

Again, this would be great for mograph stuff!
