3d selection

I was working on a project and I thought how useful 3d selection would be. 3d selection meaning that just as how we have box select and circle select and lasso select but all of those are 2d - they're all according to the view, therefore I think that 3d selection should be a thing - you can choose sphere select for example or cube select it something like that. This would be an amazingly useful modeling tool that as far as I know would be a first in the industry.

This really requires a mock-up to show how you envision such a selection mechanism to work. What does the user interface look like? How does a user use it?

* @Jason van Gumster * I think one of the possibilities is the the ability to select objects with the use of another object. Like selecting all objects that are within the monkey mesh.

Sounds great indeed. Can you also clarify how one would place or more the selection? Will the center be at the 3D cursor or at a depth-picked distance under the mouse pointer?

Another wild idea: why restrict to a sphere or box? Blender could use the currently active mesh as a selection boundary. In a workflow: having a populated scene, I place another box where I'd like to select all the objects that become enclosed by that box, after which I hit an operator to have the enclosed objects selected and the selection box deleted; an alternative operator would instead keep the selection box for another use. In yet another workflow, I have an ocean full of generated bubbles and a few whales. I do not want the bubbles where whales are, so I select the whales and hit the alternative operator to hit the enclosed bubbles.

Great Idea in my opinion. I can probably think of a lot of techniques or applications where I could use this as a tool.
