New Object > LEAD WALL (X-Ray Backplate)
I'm working with a very large scene where I have a city and I'm dropping a high-res model I've made into a location that is already occupied by a low-poly version of the same building. I'm in the process of destroying the current topology to make room for the new model (so they don't occupy the same space).
I want to use X-Ray mode, but I don't want to destroy everything behind the local area I'm working on. I want to prevent certain parts of the mesh from being affected. I'd like to see a new object introduced to the new object panel--a lead wall.
Call it what you may, but the purpose of this new object would allow the user to create a backplate for X-Ray mode. Add this object between two parts of a mesh, and all the topology behind it is either invisible or just unselectable (this setting is up to the user).

i think you should work with collections, put each levl in one. You can hide or disable them and dont even have to remove them as disabled wont take render time.
If you look down frome the sky there should be nothing below the stadium that would accidentally get selected and deleted.
You can select everything in the general area around the stadium and press Shift+H to hide everything that is not selected.
If there are some faces you relized also need to be hidden, select them and press H.
Now any selecting and deleting of faces will only affect the ones currently visible.
Tab out of edit mode and all faces are visible. Tab back into edit mode and you'll still only see the faces you had isolated. Press alt+h to see all faces again in edit mode.
Forgive me for asking the obvious, but why are you "destroying current topology"? I hope you know about the various types of visibility toggles in the Outliner panel.
In the Outliner (top-right of window) on the right hand side are various visibility toggles ("eyeball", "monitor", "camera" icons). If you cannot see these columns, click the "funnel" button at the top of the Outliner to enable various "Restriction Filters".
I apologize if I'm stating something obvious to you, but your post leaves me a bit puzzled about what you are asking for.
* @seanan * The request only makes sense to me if their entire city is a single mesh and they don't want to have to slit it up and then maybe for some other reason they would have to rejoin it and merge verts.
* @thinsoldier * Yes, you are correct. The chunk of city I'm working on is a single mesh. I removed the stadium (well, most of it) and have replaced it with a high-quality model. However, I didn't want to destroy the whole lot, just the parts I have modeled.
