stylus / 2d friendly viewport navigation
The problem :
When working on 2d projects, especially with a stylus, having to hold
shift
to avoid 3d rotation when using
middle_mouse
is quite inconvenient.
On top of that, 2d softwares do generally pan on
middle_mouse
, so this makes switching between blender and 2d softwares quite confusing.
Lastly, less important, but relevant : all 2d views from blender such as the graph editor, node editor etc... do 2d pan on
middle_mouse
.
I propose the following solutions :
-
idea 1 : this is likely controversial, but given the 2d features of blender, switch the default behavior of
middle_mouseto pan. Given that when in 3d view, we already always useshiftandcontrolto navigate the 3d viewpoer, this would not be a big inconvenience -
idea 2 : change
space_barbehavior such that a single hit does what we are used to. However, holdingspace_bardoes view panning, both in viewport, but also graph editor, node editor etc... This would be consistent with all 2d software that usually mapspace_barto panning, and this would work well with stylus users.
What do you think ?

I might miss understand you but isn't it something you can already choose and define through keymaps? Whatever keybinds you prefer to use to navigate around, you can personalize it as you wish no?
This is about the default behavior.
Option 1 should be doable with custom keymaps.
Option 2 does not seem doable with keymap settings. (I think this is a better option for stylus users)
For option 2 , i have mine set like this files.catbox.moe/ncclyu.JPG and then turn on "Emulate 3 button mouse." Which makes middle mouse button action Alt instead. so that way Alt is pan , Shift alt is rotate camera, and ctrl alt is zoom. That's the closest to a raster art app as possible .
oh that's great, I did not notice that "middle mouse action" setting ! option 1 was already there (just not default !)
Indeed, the alt to pan is not that bad, but being able to use space key there would be neat. Too bad the list of possible keys for this is very limited.
I think you should use the built-in tools to change the hotkeys, to however you want them to be. That's why there's an entire section of the software, that allows you have change your hotkeys.
Go to the view tab and lock the rotation...
