Support AVIF images file format !
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern, high-efficiency image format that offers several key advantages over traditional formats like JPEG and PNG. Smaller file sizes: AVIF typically achieves significantly smaller file sizes compared to other formats while maintaining comparable or superior image quality. Improved compression algorithms: The underlying AV1 codec employs advanced techniques, like chroma subsampling and adaptive quantization, to optimize compression. Image Quality Higher fidelity: AVIF can deliver sharper images with fewer artifacts, especially in areas with fine details or complex textures. Wide color gamut and HDR support: The format supports a broader range of colors and dynamic range, making it suitable for high-quality images and visuals.
Transparency: AVIF supports transparency, allowing for images with elements that are partially or fully transparent. Animation: While not as widely supported as GIF or WebP, AVIF can handle simple animations. Lossy and lossless compression: Users can choose between lossy compression (reducing file size at the expense of some quality) and lossless compression (preserving the original image data). Metadata support: AVIF can store metadata, such as copyright information, color profiles, and other relevant data.

Agreeing that more natively supported image formats may be great to have. Though to my current research AVIF and JPEG-XL are on par; i believe the blender team discussed introducing JPEG-XL for blender 4.4, though the libs are messy and may not work on windows; see devtalk.blender.org/t/2024-09-17-render-cycles-meeting/36668 .
JPEG-XL not support Transparency and HDR. AVIF Image Quality Higher fidelity youtu.be/SzsM4HMKmEI Generation Loss youtu.be/w7UDJUCMTng
JPEG XL does support transparency alpha, supports HDR and offers high fidelity. Just google it or ask chatty about it
AVIF support got some attention in the past two weeks on the tracker:

I second this. Switched from *.png to *.webp which has been great for performance. But *.avif has substantially smaller file size with same quality.
