Wavefront OBJ Export: Export average color of procedural materials
Currently, the Wavefront OBJ exporter recognizes some material configurations and exports those to the corresponding .mtl file:
- Solid color
- Texture/Image
Procedural textures are not exported. Blender instead just exports a material with diffuse color <0.8 0.8 0.8>.
Exporting procedural textures manually means going through all objects, unwrapping UV, baking all channels, storing the images, and changing the material to use the image. This is lot of work for scenes with hundreds of objects - and tricky to get right when multiple objects share the same material.
In blender.community/c/rightclickselect/02rL/ I suggested that Blender export procedural textures as images instead. This is complex to implement.
There's a simpler first step: Blender could export the average color of a procedural texture would help.

I think it would make more sense if some effort would be put into baking.
The color exported is not just a default 0.8,0.8,0.8; it's the "viewport colo display" it's in the material tab. It's nothing to do with shader
