Add wildcards to Collections for filtering and populating

Looking at the collections functionality, I'm missing the option to automate the addition of scene models to a collection via Wildcards. (e.g. Maya's way of setting up render layers and geometry)

e.g. A big scene with tons of grass models for the background. This would become cumbersome to add/remove everything manually, and becomes prone to error with large scene changes or additions.

Having a wildcard system for filtering/adding on collections would be a great help. It also forces you a bit to have a organized scene as well ;)

Like, add new object to the selected collection? Or "import to X collection"?

I have no clue what a wildcard system is. Maybe you should explain so that everyone could understand.
And the devs will ask for a mockup or anything explaining how this would be integrated into 2.8's paradigm.

Wildcards are very common in programming and DCC. It's characters like *, #, % etc. and are a way to make selections more simple. Never done a search in a file explorer like *.doc?

Like I said, in Maya you can 'fill' renderlayers with objects via wildcards or more complex programming filters. So e.g. a filter with grass* will give you a result like grass01, grass02, grass10, grass_old01, grass_new01 etc. For Blender, this result is now added to a collection of choice. It's a very quick way to keep track of objects in your scene, and a way to keep certain collections filled with the proper stuff.

See the Maya help page on this here: help.autodesk.com/view/MAYAUL/2017/ENU/

Hope that explains this concept a bit better.
