Performance and Profiling

Currently in Blender when a scene, a rig, or an addon is not well optimized it is very difficult to know exactly what uses the most resources. I think it would be very interesting to add tools to profiling and know the performance characteristics of the different elements of the software.

  • If it would be possible to know in the interface which areas consumes a lot of resources so easily know what area to close to optimize.

  • In a rig, know which bones or layers consumes a lot of resources to calculate durring animation.

  • Know which shaders consumes a lot of resources during a render.

  • Know this for a meshs and the modifiers

  • The particle systems

  • Etc

There are many other examples in which profiling tools are interesting. If we look at the Unreal Engine all its tools are in the editor and they are essential to optimize a game. Why not do this in Blender?

Here some exemple from Unreal Engine.

This as a general tool would be incredibly useful. Similar to the Ms readouts on nodes of GN which makes troubleshooting much nicer, but also for other things!

really good idea, incredibly useful tools, imagine how much efficiency we could get out of our renders if we had specific readouts telling us which features are using the most resources

Yes please! Exactly that is incredibly needed. Especially for complicated rigs where there can be many different elements that slow its evaluation down. A simple brute force method of deleting different bones isn't sufficient here. We need actual profiler tools!

The question is about modificators. Does you apply all?

I hope some profiling tools come soon, it would be really great to see where scenes need optimizations!
