Proposal: Upgrade Subdivision Modifier
New features I think will make Subdivision Modifier better:
- Geometry Node based
- Volume Control: control how much new geometry will offset (inward or outward) compare to original shape, this control is useful to retainning original shape after Subdiv
- Smoothness Control: this control Subdivision moothness factor: More smooth or Less smooth (0 to 1)
Preference:
- I use this Subdivision geo-node based modifier as reference:

I do not agree with this feature. The subdivision modifier works perfectly as it is, you already have the crease value for each vertices and edges (controllable through edit mode, but this is stored as an attribute 'crease_edge' so you can control it through geometry nodes as well)
If you want to smooth, you can always use a smooth modifier. And major points, the subdivision surface modifier also holds the adaptive subdivision option which is a feature that is involved only at rendering process, which is absolutely not compatible with geometry nodes.
But I understand you appreciate having a geometry nodes based Subdivision Surface modifier with more fun options and sliders, and that's what it is for, you can create your own custom modifier and use it as you like. If you do not want to get your hands into complex geometry nodes things, there is an upgrade of the Blender Extension Platform that is planned, and the community will be able to share custom assets including node groups for Geometry Nodes (essentially custom modifiers) and you will probably find someone who will share the modifier of you dream!
I hope they release this upgrade of the extension platform soon
What difference does that make?
As you may already know, subdivision modifier Catmull-Chalk do 2 work at one: Subdivide and Smooth Geometry.
Current SubD doesn't have Smoothness control, so I propose one. And you may need to expand volume after SubD to compensate the volume loss by something like a Volume control (Control expansion inward or outward like Shrink/Wrap tool).
Please note that current SubD by RM above missing "Optimize display" feature from original SubD, and it's Volume control not work as expected (weird spike at corners or edges).
And Geometry node based modifiers are the future isn't it? So I think Blender can upgrade SubD modifier at the same time with the transfer process to Geometry node.
