Quickly Showcase Texture (2.7 to 2.8 features removal, low poly artist)
in essence, the old way let us low poly artists quickly see our models with our applied texture in an easy "open file" way via "Texture Solid". No material setup. Great for those who intend to have models in game engines.
2.8 is great, but the material node system is cumbersome for us when we just wish to view our model with our applied texture. No adjustment or individual model setup to each object, as seen in the video. Nor do we have to manage another window.
If later versions of Blender could retain that feature (And disable mipmaps under features) that'd be great. It is a specific feature for an intended lowpoly workflow, granted, so I understand it not being top-priority, but it'd be nice to have the option some time in future.

While the feature is handy, and the old way was fast, it was also confusing and weird.
I agree that it would be nice to have a way to very quickly set up a preview material that uses a specific texture. It would also be very nice to have a way to have a quick UV preview material that can be used to check if the UVs are working correctly.
I think the real question is something like "How would you like to implement a one-click button or hotkey that automatically creates a basic material using a specific texture?"
@janne: A different solution is perfectly fine. It's mostly a "too many clicks/menus" problems right now :)
Yeah, thumb up. Must have feature for game artist. Well, it would be even better if we could check "texture solid" based on which node in shader we have picked - because sometimes you attach not only diffuse/albedo but also roughness, metalic etc. View presets would be awesome!!!!!!!!
@veezen: I really depend on it as a game artist. Doesn't need to be exactly like the old system, but something that lets us just open and apply a texture inside the UV editor would be amazing :)
