Use F2 to Rename in more place...

like in Shape Keys/Vertex Group/Bone Group/UV Maps/Vertex Colors that you can just hover mouse over it and use Arrow to select up/down then press F2 to rename without double click every time.

another thing is while you rename you can press Tab to select and rename next line like in Windows Explorer.
