SDF Modeler
Where there anytime thoughts about SDF (Signed Distance Field) modeling like Substance 3D Modeler, Android SDF3D, etc for blender? So we have Metaballs but with very limit controlls for real modelling. As far as I know SDF is less hardware hungry and bring a lot cool features which you can also combine with traditional poly modeling and sculpting. I saw in 3.6 there will be SDF Geometry Nodes. This is a first nice step in that direction but not the same as a convenient modeling feature.
Some ideas for modeling:
- Using all the primitives for
-
Using curves/splines for
- Boolean like features to combine, subtract, intersect, outset, inset, etc.
- Controlles over the Bevels/Corner
- Remesh them for Polymodeling and/or Sculpting.
- Maybe to extend the boolean modifier with SDF calculations could be a thingy. To create clean geo for further use like beveling

in addition to what others have said- use the search: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/TVcbbc/
The discussion is about render and shading. I'm talking about modeling using SDF like the apps mentioned. This is a difference for me. maybe I missed something thats why I framed it as a question. Phrases like "use the search" is kind of harsh and kind of misplaced.
I'm the one who suggested this four years ago, and what you proposed is exactly what the 4 year old proposal is about but with far greater detail. so I stand by my 'use the search' comment :)
It's worth pointing out that the old proposal only mentions 'shader' because at the time (again, four years ago) the only thing remotely comparable was the bevel shader (there were no geometry nodes, etc)- but the proposal was clearly about modeling.
It would be nicer to simply point out that it's been proposed before. Saying "Use the search" does nothing but frame them as an idiot. It's just mean and uninviting. I've searched before myself and inevitably made a duplicate regardless.
It's very easy to mark a post as duplicate, and at worst a post like this simply brings more attention to something that was presented ~4 years ago.
You're reading into a three word sentence pretty deeply. If I were to stretch my imagination to its limits I could see it as a mild admonition at worst, and certainly not "mean and uninviting". If I go to a restaurant barefoot and the hostess asks me to go put shoes on before coming inside my feelings will not be hurt because A) it's common courtesy, B) it's the rules of the establishment, and C) WTF was I thinking? To continue the metaphor, would it be more or less embarrassing for the hostess to gesture to all of the people around me wearing shoes? A thought experiment for another day, perhaps.
Regardless, it was intended as a reminder- as so often people post without first considering if their idea is unique or not and proposals end up spread out over 19 different posts with 3 upvotes each. We've meandered pretty far off topic now, doncha think?
I wasn't the only one who noticed. That's two paragraphs too many to just take the advice and be a nicer person.
Have a GN addon. May be it could add the official GN node group

Thx for the info and still interesting project. I'm thinking about convenient modeling on the fly without circumstances over GN's where you have to tweak all around.
