Increment move by a specific distance

I miss one feature known from vector programs. It is an option to define a distance, that selected things will be moved by pressing a certain key. It is called nudge.

Example: User is able to define own nudge distance, that fits to his style. Some will choose 1 mm if working with small objects. Other will choose 1 m or 10 m for moving some parts away for a moment (sometimes there is a need of seeing volume of an object even offset, instead of not seeing it when using hide).

It can use alt+shift+ctrl and arrow keys to move in specific direction. Nudge value should be visible all the time on the screen so probably next to create orientation (top bar) and editable all the time. It should work in edit and object mode but even only in object mode it will be a huge help. Who once try this option will never use G + Y +3 input (an example) when blocking things. Instead he will press and hold alt+shift+ctrl and press 3 times an arrow with the chosen direction.

I think this would be pretty easy to make as addon if you know python (I sadly don't). Here is concept with just keymaps trickery:

Demo: video

Problems with keymap method:

  • flashing of header and status bar is very annoying
  • can't customise distance easily or have it be zoom adaptable like grid
  • holding keys instead of repeating presses produces arbitrary distances

Proper implementation would need to solve these.

Thanks for the reply. After I googled a bit I even found an add-on but... it is experimental, so may never be polished enough. May also bring some problems, because having more and more add-ons is a situation, that from my experience, makes Blender less stable or brings unexpected behaviour.

here is a link: orbit.style/nudge/

I just would like, that some very useful features (especially from modeling field, that in my opinion is a bit neglected) could be included into vanilla Blender, to limit any unwanted interference with other add-ons. Paradigm, that Blender is a core (hub) with dozens of add-ons is a great power of Blender but also a great trouble.
