File browser deficiencies

There are a number of problems with the browser that should be straightforward to address:

• the tree always starts in the home directory rather than current directory, this should be optional

• path completion in the file directory box usually doesn't do anything productive, thus providing an irritating experience.

• access to settable preferences is opaque to say the least, not well covered (or difficult to find) in the help system.
