Group function

Hello! I am a long-term user of Blender. I have always highly recognized the software's open-source philosophy and powerful functions, and have continuously paid attention to the experience improvement brought by each version update. During the long-term use of Blender for 3D modeling, scene construction and post-adjustment, I found that the current object management method has certain inconveniences when dealing with complex scenes. Therefore, I hereby put forward a function requirement, hoping to provide a reference for the optimization of the software.

When dealing with complex models containing multiple sub-objects (such as scene components, mechanical structures, character parts, etc.), although basic classification can be performed through functions such as collections, there are still many inconveniences in actual operation. For example, when it is necessary to select, move, scale, hide or lock a group of closely related objects (such as a furniture set, a group of decorative components) as a whole, it is necessary to manually select objects one by one or operate collections multiple times, which is not only time-consuming and laborious, but also easy to mistakenly select irrelevant objects. Especially in scenes with many model levels and a large number of objects, it greatly affects work efficiency and increases the probability of operational errors.

Based on this, I hope the official can add an "Object Grouping" function. The specific requirements are as follows:

  1. Basic Grouping Function: Support users to select multiple objects of any type (models, lights, cameras, etc.) and merge them into a "Group" through shortcut operations (such as right-click menu, shortcut keys). The objects in the group remain their original attributes (material, modifier, hierarchical relationship, etc.), and a group object is generated at the same time. The group can be named as a whole to facilitate the distinction of group components with different functions.

  2. Convenience of Group Operation: The group object can support basic operations such as overall selection, movement, rotation, scaling, hiding and locking. Operating the group will not affect the independent attributes of individual objects in the group; at the same time, it supports double-clicking the group object to enter the group editing mode to edit a single object in the group separately. After exiting the editing mode, the group still maintains overall integrity to avoid confusion of objects in the group caused by misoperation.

  3. Group Hierarchical Management: Support the nesting function of groups, which can merge multiple small groups into a large group to form a clear hierarchical structure, adapting to the object management needs of complex scenes; at the same time, support the group dissolution function. After dissolution, the objects in the group return to an independent state without losing any original data.

  4. Compatibility and Adaptability: It is hoped that this grouping function can be compatible with Blender's existing operation logic, shortcut key system and other functions (such as collections, parent-child relationships, modifiers, etc.), without conflict or redundancy; at the same time, it can adapt to the use needs of different scenes, whether it is small-scale scene construction or large-scale project production, it can play an efficient role in object management.

The addition of this function will effectively solve the pain point of cumbersome object management in complex scenes, reduce repetitive operations, and improve the efficiency of modeling and scene editing. It is especially practical for users engaged in interior design, game modeling, film and television scene construction and other fields that require a lot of object management.

As a loyal user of Blender, I always look forward to the continuous optimization and improvement of the software, and I am willing to cooperate with the official for function testing and feedback. Thank you for the hard work of the development team, and look forward to your reply!

Creating collection instances is still rather cumbersome, and it is not convenient to manage and operate the entire group and individual objects separately.

what do you think about this: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/OqmR/

It looks good, but we won’t know its actual performance until we use it in practice

Please avoid asking to copy a proprietary software That's potential for troubles (see this post for more context on that). Plus it doesn't make a good feature proposal on its own, since it assumes that both community members and developers are already familiar with what you refer to, which you can't expect.

Blender also has its own workflows and design goals, so what works elsewhere might not be a good fit. It’s much more helpful to focus on the actual problem and how Blender could improve to solve it.

The goal is to make your idea clear enough that anyone from any background can understand the need and benefits, and that a developer passing by can quickly assess how feasible it might be without needing to do more research.

Try structuring your proposal like this:

  • What’s the problem, and why does it matter?

  • What are current workarounds, and why aren't they enough?

  • What’s your proposal, and how it fits in Blender?
Describe the feature or change you’re suggesting, how it would work, and how it could fit into Blender’s interface or workflow. Mockups are gold here.

Remove the “like 3dsmax”, and the proposal completely stands on its own.

And it’s not as if grouping has not been requested for years, so the intent behind this request should be pretty obvious to anyone who’s been following blender development, and using it for any significant amount of time.

How does it stand on its own if it requires "following blender development, and using it for any significant amount of time" ?

Notice how the OP never says what the solutions lack, only that they are lacking? Notice how comments mention instancing even though it was never mentioned in the OP?

To me that sounds more like the post is just vague enough for readers to project what they think it means.

OK, I didn't expect that mentioning the name of 3dsmax would cause any disputes. I understand. However, I think the grouping is already very clear and understandable.

the only solution is to make collections instances for now. In my opinion, blender focuses more into to the movie industry rathen than the architecture. There are a few shortcomings that dont allow it to scale for big projects and grouping is one of them.

I think this is a very basic function. I have worked on many complex projects using Blender, but file management has always been a disaster.
