Trace bitmap to Grease Pencil

Hello everyone. I propose to add trace to grease pencil in Blender. I know there are software (like Inkscape) which already do this, but they're quite large compared to this single operation. There also are libraries like potrace which are a couple megabytes in size and could handle this well.

Thanks in advance for your 2 cents.

It's not necessary to label RCS posts as feature requests - everything on this forum is!

Sorry, let me explain better: when you load an image, that should be opened in the texture editor. From there, there should be a button to trace the image, then the traced image should be converted to curves, as when importing svg.

My idea is to have a trace option in the image editor, when tracing, the edges are converted to GP layers. If possible, also retain colors. Same could go with SVG importing, which could import paths to GP instead of curves, still retaining colors if possible.

* @chicochetal * If they're traced in the Image Editor, how does the user position the results in the 3D View?

* @Jason van Gumster * curves/paths are forwarded to grease pencil

jason

* @chicochetal * How? Where? This is where mock-ups really help.

chicochetal Author

* @Jason van Gumster * once you trace an image, results are shown in the grease pencil window. Image editor is only used to load the image.

jason

* @chicochetal * When you say "grease pencil window", I'm assuming that you mean the 3D Viewport. If that's the case, will the traced strokes be centered around the 3D cursor? How will they be oriented? Facing up the Z axis? Facing the camera?

There's a whole workflow here that really needs detailed descriptions.

chicochetal Author

* @Jason van Gumster * No, in truth I mean the 2D window in 2.8

jason

* @chicochetal * As far as I can tell, there isn't a dedicated 2D Viewport in 2.8. I'm making a new build now to double-check, but it wasn't there as of a couple days ago. Grease Pencil animation work happens in a 3D View... maybe view-locked with the camera, but it's still the 3D View.

jason

* @chicochetal * That's still the 3D Viewport. Just tuned for Grease Pencil animation.

* @Jason van Gumster * Oh, ok, then it should be as for svg import: along positive x and y

* @Ivano Da Milano * I think possible way to do this can just

-Import Image as Plane into the scene -A Button similar to convert mesh from curve, but convert to grease pencil instead -The Image Plane turns into a "image traced" grease pencil object

jason

What would the interface look like for this? Would you be tracing from a plane with an image mapped to it? An image empty? Show (preferably with images and mock-ups) how this should work from the user's perspective.

* @Jason van Gumster * Like you already do with Import->SVG, but tracing and creating curves
