No need of any workarounds.
Someone even vote for this... No need to spam everyday suggestion like " please make Blender but 3D Max ". Just keep googling/youtube watching/readint/trying addons/learning in general. Then if u really, realllllyyyy can't find any solution anywhere - come here and propose solution.

* The reason why I request this to be in Blender itself is that I don't want to depend on addons too much that may deprecate eventually or could potentially introduce bugs. Do you have a list of recommended addons with good track records?

@Hologram
* There is no any list of recomended addons. It all up to you, your workflow, your taste... If u don't want to depend on addons - probably, u don't want to use Blender, because Blender is all about addons.

* I understand that, I am really impressed by Blender in terms of workflow and simplicity of the UI and keymap UX. I'll have a look into some addons then. In case I have any further questions, is there a way to contact you elsewhere?

I should mention that Blender doesn't have exactly the same relationship with addons as other software do. Lots of "core" things in Blender are addons. Cycles renderer is an addon. Each Import/export is an addon.
Though I understand the idea of avoiding addons for fear of bugs and deprecation, those issues aren't that common with addons shipped ou-of-the-box with Blender. Besides, if an addon introduce a bug, the simple thing to do is to temporarily disable it and report the bug for it to be fixed in the next update.
Also, addons that are quite popular usually don't lack dev support. So unless you use some shady addon very few people have used in the last decade or some in-development one, you don't have much to worry about.
And finally, having something implemented in Blender as an addon or not really doesn't change its probability to bring bugs or deprecation. It just changes how it's technically implemented, not how well it is done nor for how long it will stay.
All that being said. I wonder if such simple operations wouldn't be better to be implemented in the software at low-level using C instead of python. Performance-wise, it might do better when it comes to using these operations on dense meshes. But I'm not an expert on that.

* Do you happen to know of an addon which allows me to map Alt + X/Y/Z to align to X/Y/Z? I still find this more convenient. Although I do like Machin3 tool's align pie as well occasionally.

* If u mean object align - enable addon Align Tools ( it goes with Blender ), then right click on some of buttons and Assign Shortcut.

@IIIFGIII
* Thanks, that's great! And is there something similar in Edit mode as well?

You can use the scale tool by pressing "S" >
the axis you want
> "0" of the numpad, done! No addons required! c:
