changes since 2.8

Hi,

I'm not a typical blender user, as I don't use blender for image or movie creation.

I use blender as "poor mans 3D cad for linux" - for now more than 5 years. When I learned blender, I loved the layer system and the stability with great mass of data. It was hard to learn, especially hardsurface modelling, but now i'm as fast in blender as in other cad systems. Well, I can't print 2D views, but I don't need that. I'm fine with stl-exports, which became better from release to release.

I was sad with the changes from 2.8 on. Collection was a very exiting change, but loss of layers and loss of creation dialogs are so expensive, that I stil use 2.79

To create precise objects, I never use mouse for creation, but enter numbers in creation dialog. Same is true for resize, rotate, whatever. I only use the mouse to rotate/scale model for viewing purpose, but never for editing. Since 2.8 its impossible to create precise objects. Even worse with 2.9, where object creation is bound to mouse clicks and movement.

Don't know, whether blender developers like to support precision modelling. If so, it would be nice, to get the lost dialogs from 2.79 - may be based upon an option in user preferences?

I had to learn, not to use scale in object mode, as it does not really scales the object, but only changes the scale factors. But with different scale factors, bevel modifiers create weird results. Bevel works best if all scale factors are 1. So I changed my workflow to scale an object in edit mode, which leaves the scale factor unchanged.

I heavily use transform->change origin - couldn't find that function in 2.8 or 2.9

It would be nice to get a statement from developers, whether precise modelling will be supported ...

Not sure what you talk about. Maybe those things?

As far as I know, 2.8 and 2.9 bring new tools in the toolbag. If you don't want to use the new tools, just don't use them, they don't replace the previous ones.

Probably either this in the Sidebar > Tools tab:

Or this when right clicking an object:

That's probably not the place to ask then, Devs usually don't comment there. Maybe a better chance on devtalk.blender.org . Besides, there is no official support for precision modeling, nor there is official support for anything actually. Blender is made by and for its users.
In fact an acquaintance of mine develops some addons for CAD-like modeling on Blender. He's more on the architecture side but some of his work might interest you . Just to show you that, it's not all about what the devs do, it's also about the community. There's more and more of CAD and precision modeling people joining the community since 2.8 and it keeps growing, which means more and more people asking for feature and more actually developing them in Blender or as addons, and making tutorials.

Though I think the issue here is more that you don't keep up with the changes and assume everything is either like in 2.79 or is gone, which isn't true: most things are the same under the hood, lots of things were added, very few removed. The UI was somewhat revamped, so things you used to find in a specific place or under a specific name might have changed, but they are still there. Maybe it could be hepful to post your struggles on the BlenderArtists forum . There will be plenty people from the community happy to help you.

Hi,

thank you for your reply. May be I made some errors - but I try to follow blender dev and try new version from time to time and read documentation.

May be, one error was to use localized variant, where I did not find lots of options.

Any way - I tried to follow your samples from provided pictures and could not find them.

First of all - what I meant with object creation dialog: Image compared to what is available in 2.9: Image So I don't see, where I can enter radius and height as before.

... and sidebar tools does not show any layer related boxes, which I miss and you claim, that I should have it. Image

I would be very happy, if I could find the layer box. May be, they have shortcuts as before?

I realized, that you guys take me for stupid and punish my posting. The point is, I'm a fan of blender and I use it on a daily base. But I did not find a way (yet) to arrange myself with blender 2.8 or 2.9

So sorry guys - just wrote my experience.

//edit: obviously I'm to stupid to use this forum. Can't use Image tags. Sorry

* @reinhard * I do not want to make you look stupid, I just want to make sure we are on the same page, and share with you my experience.

To post pictures, you can either drag'n'drop a picture file inside the editor (doesn't work for animated GIF), or you can upload them elsewhere and use the direct link to insert them in your comment using the following markdown code:
