Hiya, could we get this puppy back into 2.8?
It's as if a part of Blender tradition has been stripped. The workflow was impeccable.

No point filling Blender 2.8 with old tech. The new system is way better and more powerful than 20 name-less , limited yellow dots. Having both new and deprecated old tech will just make it bloated.

Probably wouldn't be all that hard to implement as an add-on, perhaps with some ability to map a specific collection to a particular layer button.
Just for the record, Blender comes with a built-in add-on (disabled by default) called Collection Manager that implements sort of the same functionality.
