Visual Indicators for Unapplied Scale in Blender

Imagine being able to instantly identify which objects in your Blender scene have unapplied scales. A color-coded or graphical indicator in the 3D viewport or even a filterable feature in the Outliner could offer this immediate clarity, streamlining your workflow and reducing the risk of errors.

Unapplied scales can lead to a host of major issues. First, they can skew the effects of modifiers, yielding unexpected or incorrect results. Second, they can create glitches in texturing, rendering UVs imprecise or distorted. Third, they can complicate export processes, resulting in warped meshes or incompatible files.

The risk here is twofold. Not only can these issues occur, but it's also easy to lose track of which objects haven't had their scale applied, especially in complex scenes with numerous objects. The result? Wasted time debugging and preventable errors.

A simple visual indicator solves this issue by providing instant feedback, enabling users to identify and correct problematic elements before they become major roadblocks. Whether shown as an icon or unique color in the 3D space, or as an identifiable or filterable option in the Outliner, this would be a simple yet powerful enhancement that would make Blender more user-friendly and efficient.

i think Shift+I should open inspection panel for

  • Scaled object
  • False color
  • face orientation
  • Object with high-res textures
  • Object with over 2 level of subdivision

Great idea but I think this idea should also apply to position and rotation

You can overide materials using geometry nodes depending on scale

There is already a visual indicator in the N Panel for the scale. Adding a redundant visual indicator increases clutter, and also doesn't help when you want to intentionally have unapplied scale.

The N pannel is only for selected object, when you select multiple object it doens't behave like in other software, like unreal, where if all selected is "0,0,0" it will show it, if they have different value (or at least one different) it will show "multiple values".

Having an easy way to visualize this could be nice (just like we have face orientation is easier to see each face with blue/red than having to select the face in the spreadsheet and extrapolate the bivector of the dot product of the vector of the quaternions of the face and the normal)
