Color coded strips in VSE

Now color is used to indicate different types of strips. I would like to be able to also set custom colors of strips. Color is a fantastic way of giving information fast so it would be a great aid in projects to visually set and see status of clips etc. -Alright, 10 clips to animate (red), five to fix in comp (blue) other than that about half the film finished (green). Much like we can do with nodes in the compositor.

Ok, you got a point in that. But I think we can have other ways to indicate type. Meta strips already have small lines that separates them from other types. Audio has waveforms if you enable them. If we can have indicators like that, as well as keep the default colors so we won't confuse people I think we're good to go.

@David Rylander: Agreed. So that solution should be part of this proposal . I would suggest that you make a recommendation, preferably with a mock-up.

@Jason van Gumster: Thank you. I will when I get some time. Here, or anywhere else?

jason

@David Rylander: Here works fine. You can also edit the original post and make any changes/updates there that you'd like.

Keep the default colors for different strip types. Allow us to change this to custom colors. Those who likes it as it is don't have to bother and those of us that would use it wouldn't mind I think. We would know what we have in the strips anyway. I think colors are way to powerful to be wasted at indicating strip types. ;)

@David Rylander: I disagree with the "we would know what we have in the strips anyway" argument. When I collaborate with others or when returning to a project that's been sitting for a while, I definitely don't "just know" what the strips are. Color provides a clear indicator. I'm not saying that it's the only possible way to indicate strip type, but if we start using color for something else, then there still needs to be a way to quickly tell one type of strip from another. It could be in shape, shading, a colored line along the top or bottom or the strip, an icon... but there needs to be some kind of clear indicator.

@Jason van Gumster: Hmm after editing video in many NLEs with many other editors, I find that User color coding is preferred by everyone over the standard or default palette. The issue here is mostly to do with the VSE having media agnostic tracks (so a strip could be anything) making it hard to group strip functions by their geography on the screen. I have in the past, added a color strip to a media strip and Metastripped them together, giving you a little colored bar for reference.

@David McSween: I don't dispute the value of user defined colors. But if we have that, then we need another way of visually determining a strip's type. I offered some suggestions in that regard.

How would you propose that we support this feature while also clearly indicating which strips are image/video/audio/scene/etc?
