why Not Vertical node editor ?
Hello blender brains !
as a visual effect artist working between Nuke and blender most of the time I always wondered ... why node editor in blender is horizontal with no option to turn nodes flow vertically like my other program Nuke ! ??
the last update 2.80 is changing all the UI with amazing updates ... even the Right click wish was the unique touch blender has ... but still the node editor is kept like it is ... and every time i go back and forth between blender and Nuke my neck and head is turning with it back and forth ...
isn't the time to get the node editor an option to have a vertical flow for node tree ? and maybe another design for the nodes it self ?
what do you think guys ? i would like to hear your opinion about it !
cheers !

I dont know any other program that offers the choice to change the direction of the nodegraph and this would be nontrivial to add and maintain. I also feel that there are more urgent issues to tackle at this point in time. You could make a point for completely switching to a vertical layout but I dont think maintaining both version would be a sensible thing to do.
I think, you need try to make Principle BSDF node horisontal and show us, that it is better.
Nuke's outputs aren't printed on the node as sockets, so it's easy enough to have any orientation you want. But blender prints its nodes by name, near their respective sockets. Text is horizontal, not easy to change that!
What's the point?... There are plenty of programs that have horizontal node editors and no one bats an eye.
I see no practical reason to change. Left to right is intuitive as is a natural direction of creativity, not in the sense of writing or reading. But when you draw a flow on a board, you naturally start at the left, then you progress to the right. Because this is the natural direction of timelines.
While not an overly complicated task, providing this "as an option" is still not a small feat. For instance, what happens when one person with a vertical preference opens a .blend file that was created by someone with a horizontal preference?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but most node editors are either vertical or horizontal, right? How many of them give the option of choosing which orientation you use?
In short : Not worth the trouble to make it.
I see this request's status is set as "In Development". Where can we see that ?
* @-L0Lock- * I think the OP changed it in a fit of wishful thinking.
