Remove the zoom limit / change mouse wheel to move not zoom
When using the mouse wheel there is this annoying limit and the only work around I have found is to zoom out and then press "num ." key to focus on the objects so I can zoom in more. I don't understand why there is a limit anyway. Sometimes I even have to move inside an object to work from the inside, rn I have to roate in there or use walk/fly mode to get there because of that zoom limit thing. It makes moving around the 3D space really annoying and serves no useful purpose. If it was fixed somehow as in it wont go inside an object I'd understand it's purpose but I stops the user from zooming depending on where the user started the zoom. It also influences the walk/flyspeed which makes it even more annoying. Just make users press the num + - to change the speed.

The issue is you expect a zoom (mouse-wheel roll) to work as a dolly (Ctrl middle-mouse-button).
It works exactly like cameras: zoom = moving the lenses around. This translates into 3D software as zooming while conserving the same viewport transform origin. Meaning you zoom in and out an invisible point.
What you want is a dolly = moving the camera forwards/backwards instead of moving its lenses. This translates in 3D software as moving the viewport transform origin.
The difference between the two is also the reason why sometimes your viewport rotates weirdly when you're zoomed in/out a lot : the viewport's transform origin is far away from what you actually see, hence the needs to sometimes recenter the view on a selection (numpad dot) or to enable the viewport's rotation around the mouse cursor or selection.
* @-L0Lock- * thx for the explanation, I'd like a mouswheel dolly then.
* @brah.rah * Feel free to change the keymap to your liking 👍
You can find the inputs named as "Dolly View":
* @-L0Lock- * I've tried but I can't get the standard zoom removed. I've searched for zoom and in 3D View I made sure everything uses ctrl + middle mouse. But blender still uses the zoom...
* @brah.rah * well that may be a bug to report using Help > Report a bug.
* @-L0Lock- * Why is a camera/lenses related behavior applied to a regular view is beyond me. Thanks for the explanation tho. 👌🏻
* @brah.rah * happens to me too, but i suspect i must be missing something
* @-L0Lock- * I am afraid this might have no solution, given we can't assign "Mouse Wheel" but have to pick either "Mouse Wheel Up" or "Mouse Weel Down" which obviously can't play well with just "view3.dolly"
Maybe if one could add another "Dolly View": one with Delta 1 for Wheel Up, another one with Delta -1 for Wheel Down...?
But I can't seem to find how can one add another action/shortcut.
* @brah.rah * One issue might be that you are setting "middle mouse" where IMO you want "wheel"... Another issue is explained in my comment from [17 Feb 2021 23:51:48 GMT]
I think it's because it zooms in smaller increments the closer you are to the focus point of the viewpoint. If this wasn't the case you would still be zooming in huge increments when you were working very close to a surface you had zoomed in on.
* @kasper.arnklit * yes and it sucks, there has to be a better way then zooming out and then moving in, so you get more zoom. The moving in part is really bad too since the only fast and good way is to use the mousewheel. We luckily have num . but it's still really annoying. We need control over the increments or at least a button/function to reset it.
