Save Compositor NodeTree Group like Shader/Geometry/World nodes
I would like to have multiple unique setups for the real time compositor that i can easily swap between and append to other files.
It seems strange it isn't possible and if it is user error on my part please let me know.

Using the free hotnodes extension for now and it works well for those of you that are impatient.
But it is possible, am I missing something? You can create nodegroup assets. Its not the whole tree but still
Yes you can group a compositor node tree and use that group anywhere as an asset or within the same file with Shift+A > Group > my_group. As long as you don't manually turn a copy into a single user, every copy refers to a single datablock, meaning everything that happens inside applies to every copy of the group.
However, "Render Layers" nodes can't be grouped. They have to stay at the top level because they can differ from scene to scene. The upcoming feature will handle Render Layers nodes as intelligently as possible, though it will be something to be careful with when appending or linking compositing node trees.
