Description and metadata for .blend files

I think it would be good if there was a possibility to put Name, Author, Description, Start time ,Custom tags for blender projects that will be stored in .blend file.

Having a File Info Editor with a few predefined properties plus the ability to define our own, and having those show up at the side when highlighting the .blend files in the File Browser would be grand.

As a typical use case, when one is leaving a trail of .blend1, .blend2, etc. revisions, annotating the crucial ones on what has drastically changed would help a whole lot in reverting to the correct file. Also, such properties would help in small scale project management scripting.

Feature-creeping it:

  • Have Win/Mac/Linux-based desktop environments show/index some of them so that one can check/search by that info without having to launch Blender. I think both macOS and Windows' desktops accept extensions to their indexed search systems and file metadata.
