Decimate modifire: support for retopology for games
With the advent of UE5 and Nanite technology in large studios, the pipeline for creating 3D environment assests has changed. Now for retopology it is enough to use Decimate modifier, which reduces number of pollygons from 1000 to 20000 triangles per asset (sometimes more, sometimes less). BUT current algorithm of Decimate modifier has some disadvantages, because of which it takes a long time to clean model. The current algorithm tries its best to preserve detail of the object, while leaving long triangles or excessive detail on the planes. It would be useful to add an analogue of the Decimate modifier, but with a modified algorithm, without these drawbacks.

I'm sure the devs are looking at nanite since it is very impressive and mind-blowing. This pdf released in the last week gives the breakdown/secrets how it works you might want to add that to your post maybe. advances.realtimerendering.com/s2021/Karis_Nanite_SIGGRAPH_Advances_2021_final.pdf This type of improvement may be too big for just a modifiyer but I like the idea. now the info is out in the wild blender should have it for sure! Edit - i just reread your proposal and it seems you just want an extra change to algorithm of Decimate modifier which I can get behind
