Make Dupliverts into a Modifier
Dupliverts has been a little hidden option for a while.
In its current state it requires using the parenting system and besides source and rotation, not much flexibility is provided.
Additionally, making the duplicates real only creates linked meshes, which makes modelling afterwards a pain.
I know the particle system feature allows for mesh particles, but making meshes real with the particle system is even more tedious.
I'd like to suggest making the duplivert feature into a modifier, which would hopefully give it better visibility, allow for stacking (dupliverts on dupliverts!) and when combined with vertex groups would allow you to duplicate different meshes per group.
I don't really have a way to visually show this idea, but hopefully someone else will find this as useful as I'm imagining it could be.

I think this is a priority with Everything Nodes. The team have remarked that the array modifier, and indeed any other modifier that instances geometry is inefficient and duplifaces are preferred.
I assume a complete rewrite of instancing modifiers will occur with the introduction of Everything Nodes, and as a result they will use Dupliverts/faces by default. This should be available in 2.82.
Any updates on this?
