Custom matcaps
The option of loading a custom image for the matcaps of "3d viewport". Specially usefull for sculpting process. What happens with the current ones? In general, they are ok, but I have the feeling it tend to the extrems (too much shiny, too much coloured, too much dark, etc) So then, if customization is too much effort for developers, maybe change the current ones or adding anothers would be a good point.
P.D: Not sure if this proposal already exist, is possible to do a search by word?

I would find it interesting to see how matcaps or even custom matcaps could work together with the new viewport. Will the node based (PBR) viewport materials make them redundant? Or should there be additional matcap nodes? I suggest to develop this hand in hand with the viewport project, so that both play nicely together.
YEAH! That would be great. I don't think it would be redundant at all btw because I assume matcap eats up the gpu power much less than a pbr viewport.
Matcaps are nice because they are easy to save and reuse and they apply to everything in view port no mater what materials they have.
In Blender 3.2.1, there is a gear option next to the 3D View lighting preview, with an "install custom matcap" here. Maybe this should be marked Done?
How would users add their custom matcaps in the interface? Would there be a custom button in the matcap dropdown menu? Or do you think that this would be across multiple sessions of Blender (e.g. you specify a matcap folder in the Files section of User Preferences)?
An image mock-up of how you would expect this to work would be a big help to other users as well as developers.
well, probably, is not necessary change anything in blender UI or preferences. Just is a question of having access to the current folder of matcaps. I did a search in the app folders, and it's hard to find. For some reason is "hardcoded" or "hidden". That's the matter.
So there is some technical reasons for it remains in binary I guess. So a possibility is to choose a external folder for pick up the matcaps? like this:
pin.it/G3QRB2U
So, I don't see any reason for manage these from the "N" panel.
Add a simple option in user pref are the best way to me, i wan't customize blender for my workflow.
