Option to have solidify modifier not double-up geometry on zero-weight vertices

When you use the option for the solidify modifier to get thickness from a vertex group, you can specify a thickness for vertices that are zero-weight or not in the group. But if that thickness is zero, the modifier still makes the extra geometry, it just has zero thickness, which causes z-fighting. On meshes that are convoluted (like some clothing) you often want to thicken parts of the mesh but not others, and often thickening a complicated part of a mesh even slightly leads to janky results with a lot of "poke-through".

I realize this would also result in nonmanifold geometry, which might be considered an unacceptable result, but I figured it was worth suggesting anyway, in case anyone else would find it useful.

Why not just add Weld modifier on top ?

This would be a nice improvement.

For now, one workaround is to use the new weld modifier after the solidify to merge the zero weights vertices.

* @vinicius * Good point. I'm not clear on which way the normals of the resulting faces would point, though. I'll have to check when I upgrade

This would not be easy to add in code and would probably slowdown the entire solidify. As the weld modifier got faster right now, I guess this will not be a big problem to do it that way.
