Grease Pencil 3- Interpolate Sequences and Exclude Breakdowns

THE PROPOSAL

Interpolate Sequence should add ALL strokes to the breakdowns to maintain stroke order. if run with the Only Selected option, strokes not selected should be added to new breakdowns with 0 points

Interpolate Sequence has the option to Exclude Breakdowns and should be renamed to Replace Existing Breakdowns .

THE SITUATION

I have 2 strokes on keyframe 1 and another 2 strokes on keyframe 10. I want to animate the stroke on the top to animate across to the top stroke position on keyframe 10 and the stroke on the bottom to animate to the bottom stroke on keyframe 10.

When I run Interpolate Sequence the breakdown frames have the strokes cross over one another (i.e. the destination strokes are the wrong ones). This is because the stroke order are different. On more detailed scenes, it is unreasonable to expect users to "Bring forward, send to back, move to different layers..." etc to isolate strokes for interpolation.

This is why Only Selected check box was introduced.

THE SOLUTION

When I run Interpolate Sequence without Only Selected I expect ALL strokes to be interpolated between the selected keyframes. If there are previous breakdowns that I want overwritten I would need to check the "Replace Existing Breakdowns" checkbox, if not a warning message Breakdown frames already exist is displayed and nothing happens.

When Interpolate Sequence is run with Only Selected checked and there are no breakdown frames between the selected keyframes, ALL of the strokes are added to the breakdown frames but the strokes that were not selected are added with 0 points. This will maintain the stroke order and allow for subsequent Interpolate Sequence commands to be run with a different stroke selected!

To visual how this would work with the above problem: With multiframe enabled and the current frame set to 5

  • Select the 2 top strokes
  • Run Interpolate Sequence with Only Selected checked

-Breakdowns are created with 2 strokes, but the second stroke has 0 points and does not visually animate. The top stroke animates correctly.

  • Select the 2 bottom strokes
  • Run Interpolate Sequence with Only Selected checked
  • The second stroke's points are added (because it is selected) to the breakdowns second stroke and animates correctly

NOTE: If I ran Interpolate Sequence a second time with Replace Exisiting Breakdowns checked it would delete the existing breakdowns and replace them thus the first stroke would not visually animate. Replace Existing Breakdowns is a convenience checkbox rather than selecting the breakdown keyframes and deleting them manually to start over.

Also note that this only applies to the "EDIT->Interpolate Sequence" command with Only Selected strokes.
