Axis orientation
Hey, I have a question. 3D viewport has z-axis as the up axis. But Why are the bones having y-axis as up axis? When I turn on the axes in the viewport display tab, it shows the y-axis as up axis.

The answer is probably : it's arbitrary, so the original conception of blender have choosen y as "main" bone axis. This axis system is for internal armature mechanisms like constraints, transformations, like a local transformation for objects but not editable. Hope that help.
I think it has to do with the rotation type, if you want to go down the rabbit hole (there are examples in "Alice in wonderland"), search about quaternion
