Collections in Asset Manager
Hi guys, I use Blender v3.1.0 Alpha and need some help with Collections in AM. I have 2 issues:
1.)
I created 4 basic cubes and put them in one collection (and named it as "BOX"). I marked the BOX collection as an asset and it appeared in asset manager correctly.
From there I drag and drop this "BOX" collection into the same scene.
I can move, scale and rotate this "BOX" collection, but I can't enter into edit mode, to edit them. I can't change them their materials also. I tried all the 3 options (Link/Append/Append (reuse data)) but nothing allowed me to enter into edit mode.
2.) I saved the blend file with that "BOX" collection in folder on my PC disk. Then I opened Blender, set up that blend file as source for assets for AM. So it should appear the "BOX" collection in AM, but it didn't. Sure I tried both - to refresh the AM and save and re-open the blendeer, but nothing worked.
Any advice please?
Thanks

A current workaround to add a whole collection to your Asset Library is to create an Instance of your Collection inside your asset Blender file. You do this by RMB click on your collection and choose "Instance to Scene". Now you can mark the new collection instance as an regular asset and add it to your Asset Library.
The only "small problem" with this workaround: As soon as you drag this collection from your Asset Library to a new scene, both will be added; the colleciton AND it's collection instance. But this is a natural behavior of this method and not a bug.
Collection data-blocks are not supported by the Asset Browser yet. Only Objects, Materials, and World.
Hi Pablo, thank you very much for your answer. Based on comment bellow I reported this issue to the developer.blender.org also. So as you said, this won't be a bug but the collections aren't supported yet.
Could you please tell me approx. timeline when these collection data-blocks will be implemented in Blender?
We work as CGI studio and such feature would be very very useful to our workflow.
Thank you very much and we really appreciate all the hard work you've put into all new Blender features. I wish you all the best!
It's high in the priority list. Hopefully 3.1, the main open questions are about preview images and nested collections.
See the items in the Collections column: developer.blender.org/project/board/132/
While the collections data block is not implemented you still can use the old "append" and having previews using file, batch generate previews youtube.com/watch
