Announcing Blender.Chat
Since the launch of Blender.Community we have noticed a growing interest in the idea of offering an online chat platform. Some kind of real-time sibling of the Blender communities hosted here.
So we went and did it. We took a good off-the-shelf chat server and got it up and running. After a few days we got almost 150 users with two main channels, today and hoy being quite active!
There are many places online where people can chat (on Matrix, Slack, IRC, Discord for example), so why create yet another one? The main reasons are:
- The channels are public and visible without being logged in
- Login works with Blender ID (and is ready to support Blender ID badges)
- Runs on Free and Open Source software with a solid community
Join the real-time community now at blender.chat – yes, this is the URL!
Got any more questions? Maybe we can answer them already!
Is it officially moderated ? If so, by who?
Currently blender.chat is maintained and moderated by Pablo Vazquez and Francesco Siddi on a volunteer basis. We will be looking for moderators in the future: if you are interested, drop us a message!
I have an idea for a channel, who do I talk to?
You can create your own channel and invite people over. If it works well, you can become moderator and make it part of the main channels list.
Can the files be deleted from the server by the user?
Yes. Deleting the post will delete the file from storage.
Why a web-based chat and not IRC?
Resumable conversations, media attachments, email notifications, mobile-ready and video stream embedding, are the main reason why we believe a web-based chat is a good idea. Also, IRC bridging is in the works!
See you there !
