Will there ever be raytracing in eevee?

Just wondering, it would be cool to have more accurate reflections and shadows kind of how video games are using them now day. Still staying real time that is.

Hi, It could be possible, but you would need:

  • Hardware to support it (ex: RTX video card type)
  • Blender create a new hybrid approach to rendering by assigning renderers to passes:
    - 1 pass using EEVEE elements
    - 1 pass using CYCLES and RTX hardware for reflections, refractions (like in new games)

But don't consider this "real time". This will be fast and precise but not 30fps. Games have highly optimised assets and they are not aiming for the best quality but acceptable quality.

I'm not even sure the dev have considered this yet... 🙄

* @Christian Clavet * I would extend the question: will RTX be implemented in EEVEE sometime in future?

* @Christian Clavet * Thank you for the info! I do own an rtx card and I'm sure future GPU's will have raytracing capabilities implemented in them. Real time playback would not be an issue because eevee at the moment does not playback at full fps, at least not on the project I'm working on. But mainly moving around the scene adding and tweaking lights and texture in real time while having some raytracing on would be a good start :) Hope the devs can see the benefits in the near future.

* @damian winnichenko * Hi, It would mean implementing RTX specific code as EEVEE new features that would only work on RTX based hardware...😒

I doubt the devs would use this approach unless NVIDIA would do most of the work for them. AMD is releasing hardware to do the same thing as NVIDIA, but from what I've heard RTX is windows only. MAC? Linux? 🙄

EDIT: Seem that is possible to use RT Raytracing on Linux using Vulkan:

* @andrestopmo * It can't be ignored this is a very close future. search hybrid raytracing on google.
