Q&A: SWITCH TO BLENDER with DANIEL BYSTEDT | Blender Everyday

Hi Daniel, I don't know if you remember me. I am the guy who wrote the Mesh data transfer add on. My question is about you transitioning from Maya to Blender and how do you deal with the lack of most of the technical features for rigging. I love Blender, to the point that I have even started learning the Python API and releasing free add ons for it to provide Maya users what is missing, but I happened to hit walls every time I was either suggesting something or reporting a bug. In more than one occasion I realized that the community was just not interested in what I was proposing even if, as a Maya user, those are fundamental features. I was actually thinking of learning how to code in C++ to add the features by my self, but at this point I am afraid that even if I commit the code it will be probably rejected by the consensus, (in this case Plug in API would be extremely beneficial ;)) , but I digress. So the whole point of my question is if you feel the same frustration when there is no way to wrap a geometry to another or to have a live blendshape between meshes :).

Cheers Maurizio

Hola!

Ask Daniel questions about his work or switching to Blender from other software!

The guy who invented topology is a blender convert by the way, he'd be an interesting guy to get on. He also created gollum in the lord of the rings. His name's Bay Raitt.

Hi. I know that Daniel uses Blender for his personal projects but what about your Studio that produces AAA VFX & Game cinematics, Do you think Blender can handle that high demanding productions for big part of the pipeline? because as an aspiring Animator i am not seeing any hype by the professional Animation community only the modelers,sculpters.....

Hi Pablo and Daniel!

Happy Quarantine!

Daniel, may I hope to see more of your work-in-progress /"making-of" videos in future?

Especially, I'd be happy watching the rigging process of "Goodnight Claire". Also, it'll be awesome if you could share some texture painting sessions.

Thanks!

Hi Daniel, I am a big fan of your works! Heard that a new hair object type is planned for the future. Can you tell us what you wish for hair, fur, grooming and hair simulation can be improved in Blender?

* @pipeliner * Principled Hair Shader ( docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/render/shader_nodes/shader/hair_principled.html ) is already implemented for Cycles. i figure you mean the New Hair Object Type .

*** Hard Surface/Texturing

Hi Daniel, your works are really amazing!

Some question for you:

  • most of your works are about hard surface: what are your most wanted features that you would like to be implemented in Blender to ease your work ?
  • your texturing workflow involve other 3d package? If so, what features Blender still lacks to be a competitive texturing tool?
  • can you give us some advices to be a good mecha-designer?

A suggestion for Pablo: your video about coding are very effective so keep it up but I suggest to publish a similar series of tutorial, this time dedicated to topology .

To be really proficient in box modeling, mastering the topology is the key.. all other stuff is decorative.

Pablo forgive me for asking such a thing, but I was wondering what Daniel, as a Maya/Blender user, if there were elements of Maya you wish that Blender had? I use the same software as you, and really all I "miss" from Maya is the UV tools and Light Linking (still waiting for the tangent studios code to be reviewed). I use blender at my studio, but I still end occasionally doing UV's in maya. How about you?

Hi Guys, and thanks for the Today series during these quarantine times! :)

First of all, I'm in awe of Daniel's work and often show it to people to stop the discussions about Blender not being able to do 'X'.

But I have a question for Daniel regarding project management. With Maya and other 3d applications like Houdini or Softimage, project & plugin management is very easy to set up, due to the project/scene manager and extensive environment variables.

I still feel Blender is lacking in this area, and still find it hard to set up similar workflows due to this. I would like to know how Daniel and the studio worked around this, or changed their workflow.

Cheers if you have time to answer this one :)

Is the Blender Institute more interested in getting new users or switching users of other software to Blender? For the former, Blender needs to be easier to pick up/run with, and for the latter Blender is still missing a lot of polish and some essential functionality. Are there real plans in place for addressing this, like a checklist?

2
RodDavis92

* @Karric * What polish or essential functionality is it "missing"? Be sure to elaborate.

Hey Daniel. This is Naman from Delhi, India. I am a young graduate and I started learning Blender specifically for architecture-visualization. I only knew one 3D software till last month (Sketchup 3D you must have heard about it). I wanted to know your thoughts about using Blender for the same. And also, is it the right path or should I start with a more industry recognized software like 3Ds Max? Some people also say Max is dying...?

Okay, Pablo, I know this is entirely off topic, but I've been wondering for some 100 episodes now what that tattoo on your left forearm is!

Hello Daniel :-) Can you please detail the future of Motion Graphics in Blender as compared to C4D and houdini. Actually it will take atleast 2-3 years to learn a software with its scripting part and so i have to carefully choose a software before i step in. Thank you!

* @p.shethia01 * try Animation Nodes

SHEIKH

Hi Pablo and Daniel. I am a big fan of your live streams and Daniel's Art . Question to Danial i watched you Glowing Tigers talk and i saw you were using colors to control textures and UVs where and how can we learn things like these. thank you.

Hi! I just switched to Blender. Loving it! But I find this( imgur.com/gallery/E8E0005 ) very annoying to deal with when sculpting. Any way to work around it? (Without needing to mask every time....) Thank you!

2
RodDavis92

* @carneiro.diogo * Try out Topology Automasking, It's a brush setting

Brush Settings>Advanced>Topology Automasking. Here is a pic where it is ( i.imgur.com/lDizCB0.png )

* @carneiro.diogo * if you can record your sculpting sessions and release them on youtube. Pablo Dobarro (the guy who is working on the sculpt features) told in a Blender Everyday live stream that he is watching those streams all the time and this can give inspirations for further improvements.

We Would Really Like To Know Some Of Tricks, Daniel..... (maybe 4/5 tricks or maybe even advice that you might wanna tell)

Your arts are real Masterpieces, inspires me all the time! ❤️ (And Probably Most of others who use Blender) I decided to Use Blender after I saw that Tiger you made

Hi Everyone. Daniel, what first inspired you to get into 3d, what's your greatest achievement in your 3d career, which of your works was the most technically challenging, and which one are you the proudest of?

Hi Everyone, hope you guys are doing well. I wanted to know about the progress on high poly performance improvement. developer.blender.org/T73360 Will this be done in 2.9? Milestone 3: OpenSubdiv GPU should bring back the performance to 2.79 level.

agarwalsiddhant53

How do you start learning the software. And after just learning, how do you take yourself to the next level?

Hi Daniel! Love your works. Interesting abouth your thoghts on new hair system. Have you seen Houdiny grooming tools? and GroomBear tool for Houdiny, gumroad.com/kwac It will be nice if it will be posible to add something like that. Maybe you can get some ideas from it with Sebastian. Thanks for your time and good luck=) P.S Pablo, I love your show=)

Hello Pablo..I think grease pencil should replace After effects and Blender 3D should replace Cinema 4D.. Faster and Better combination!

hi guys, love Daniel's work, so cool! I want to ask Daniel about blender physics, do u think that there is a space of improvements? Im actually running through a problem and still didnt find a solution yet, i believe there is one somewhere; blenderartists.org/t/help-with-clothes-physics-and-rigid-body-backpack/1215456

Hi Daniel, my two cents (questions) are:

  • A lightweight Houdini Solaris / Katana kind of node based lookdev/lighting module in Blender would be great. Even with the full access of GPU based comp nodes, and with EEVEE real time raytracing. What do you think? (Lookdev/lighting/comp artist's dream)

  • While I see pen in your hand, it would be great if you could check my related proposal (kinda Pressure Sensitivity Everything): \

StylusUX - pressure sensitive & pen-optimized interface elements & tools

Thanks!

dnickisson

What tools from other software do you miss the most?

nibirnafis

hello daniel and pablo. i am a big fan of both of you. but I have question for pablo. when i try to render any single object with a trasparent baground why not blender only focus on the single object? why it tries to render every single tiles when nothing is in the baground. it costs so much time in every single frame. sorry for my bad english. hope you understand my question.

Hello Pablo and Daniel,

I'm a fan of Daniel's work and have learnt quite a bit from his YouTube tutorials, he shows things that I haven't found on other channels. I'd love to see him do a complete breakdown of his workflow, maybe even a timelapse of the entire project with some tips and tricks.

renatogangemi

Hello Pablo! Is there any chance to see a fix between transparent fills and strokes on grease pencil? Tks!

funkfabrik

I prefer c4d mograph & x particles for vfx and motion graphics. I find animation nodes difficult. But will it be replaced with everything nodes?

ostapblender

Hi Daniel! Love your Eevee scenes! What's the secret thought, why they are looking so mesmerizing to watch? Well. except of decades of experience. of course. Thanks!
