Why metaballs can't have hard edges?

Hello guys. I would like to ask why metaballs can't have hard edges? They can be transformed but the edges still maintains some curved edges. Is this program too complex and might slow down blender?

Metaballs are not designed to be sharp and are mostly used to be combined together to create a "basic" and organic type model. Sometimes used to create water splashes Here is a look at metaballs: img1

You can check wikipedia to know more about them. You can also use metaballs to create a base shape, then use the resulting shape to have a base mesh for sculpting. This workflow is proposed in ZBrush. Blender have more choices of workflow to create base meshes for sculpting...

Metaballs are not a mesh the same way other objects are. Think of them more like forcefields that interact with each other.
