Blender armature pose mode icon in outliner? What role is for this?

That column of the outliner just shows what mode you're currently in on the active object. The same thing happens on a non-armature object in Edit Mode, Vertex Paint mode, etc. I suppose it's just there to help you see which item you're editing at the moment.
