There are ShellExtensions for a reason, you might want to look into Icaros, SageThumbs etc.
Or use a File Explorer such as the recently released "Found" which generates and displays thumbnails in the background like the windows explorer. No duplicated files.

This is not proper solution. Have you tested this? Try to use it on huge collection of hdris with resolution higher than 20K and you will understand, why I have created my tool.

Yes, wdym? Shell extensions or a new file browser? implementation is up to you for shell extensions. I only added a few popular examples,
Works perfectly fine for me. And thats a more propper solution running in the background, that doesnt 2x the amount of files in your folder. Yes there are setting you most likely never need the full res thumbnails, u can set a maximum. Your program has to be executed each time for a new image, and you probably, you even cap it at 720p (btw what happens in your program if the image is already smaller, does it get upscaled? lamo, that should be a x2 reduxtion or smth instead of a plain resolution limit)
And yes duh, if you already have a giant collection it takes a while to churn through gigabytes of data, wont be any different in your program, you would need to run a side by side test to fully know whats faster, but thats that. If you only want it to execute when you want to, you can configure that too in sagethumbs.
