Blender 2.83 - Issue with Migrating Settings Configurations and Add-ons

Hallo everyone!!

Normally when upgrading Blender I just click on the copy settings from previous version button on the spalsh screen.

When upgrading to blender 2.83 idid just that and all went well. After un-installing v2.82, I lost all my settings and installed Add-ons. What happened…what did i do wrong!?

Btw I had installed everything while using 2.81, I assumed stuff where linked to that version.

So I have 4 questions:

  1. Can I still get my settings back (still have 2.81 installed?

  2. How can I avoid this in the future?

  3. Is it possible to back-up the settings and import/copy to newer version?

  4. How do you guys install newer version while keeping all your configurations and add-ons in tact?

Is it a good idea to make a feature request regarding this? Like a 1 click Import/Export/Backup settings & configuration function

Go to this page: docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/blender_directory_layout.html There you can find where on your OS the userpref.blend file is. You can then copy that from 2.81 to 2.83. (Maybe Blender just linked to the 2.82 preferences, so that you lost it when you uninstalled 2.82...) If you have extra Addons installed, you can also copy them from 2.81 to 2.83. (Usually at something like ..../[version]/Scripts/Addons) But it's probably just as fast and easy to directly install them in 2.83 again.
