This is extremely useful! I used modo for 10 years and I was able to have a display for unselected objects.
Is it possible there could be an option for your add-on where whatever you have selected will make everything that's not selected wire frame for example.
Basically you would take the inverse of what selected and everything else would get the display treatment that you want.
Being able to have a different display for all of my background objects was so freaking useful in modo and I would love this was a possibility and blender.
